Otus wilsonianus was named by Lesson (1830). It is extant.

It was recombined as Asio wilsonianus by Miller (1911), Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Miller and DeMay (1942); it was recombined as Asio otus wilsonianus by Clements et al. (2017).
