Taxonomy
Eryopidae was named by Cope (1882). It is not extant. Its type is Eryops. It was considered monophyletic by Schoch (2013).

It was assigned to Apoecospondyli by Hay (1902); to Rachitomi by Watson (1919); to Rhachitomi by Kuhn (1946); to Eryopoidea by Romer (1966), Millner (1978), Carroll (1988) and Shishkin et al. (2000); to Temnospondyli by Kissel and Lehman (2002); and to Eryopiformes by Schoch (2013).
