Amphibamus was named by Cope (1865). It is not extant. Its type is Amphibamus grandiceps.
It was assigned to Protritonidae by Hay (1902); to Dissorophidae by Carroll (1988); to Temnospondyli by Haubold et al. (2005); to Temnospondyli by Maddin et al. (2012); and to Amphibamidae by Schoch and Rubidge (2005), Anderson et al. (2008), Bourget and Anderson (2011) and Schoch (2013).
