Psittacus carolinensis was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Conuropsis.
It was recombined as Conuropsis carolinensis by Hay (1930), Parmalee (1958), Kilmer and Steadman (2016) and Clements et al. (2017).
