Taxonomy
Venus securis was named by Shumard (1858). It is extant.

It was recombined as Chione securis by Etherington (1931), Clark (1932) and Weaver (1942); it was recombined as Venus (Chione) securis by Grant and IV and Gale (1931); it was recombined as Chione (Securella) securis by Trumbull and Schumard (1958); it was recombined as Securella securis by Parker (1949) and Faustman (1964).

Synonyms
  • Venus parapodema was named by Dall (1909). Its type specimen is USNM 143944, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.

    It was recombined as Chione parapodema by Weaver (1942); it was synonymized subjectively with Securella securis by Parker (1949).

Gale 1931Shell of medium size, elongate-trigonal, the posterior dorsal margin long and but slightly curved, at the extremity curving abruptly into the strongly convex ventral margm, anterior extremity short, the anterior dorsal margin descending abruptly and partly concavely from the beaks; sculpture similar to that of V. gnidia but weathered into various aspects; hinge similar to that of gnidia.
