Centrochelys marocana was named by Gmira et al. (2013). Its type specimen is AaO-3017, 3385, 180, 181, 229, a partial skeleton (mandible, humerus, radius, ulna, tibia, carpals, phalanges, osteoderms), and it is a 3D body fossil.

Georgalis et al. 2021 | “Centrochelys” marocana can be diagnosed as a member of Testudinidae and Geochelona by the full list of cranial, shell, and appendicular characters provided for these clades above. “Centrochelys”marocana can be differentiated from other geochelonans by its giant size (estimated carapace length of 180–200 cm), a large mandible with a larger dentary angle of 70°, tuberculate surface around the ramphotheca area, symphysis not pointed, humerus straight, and radius and ulna with short diaphyses that articulate proximally and distally in such a way to create a short and wide fenestra between them. |
