Taxonomy
Hypsognathus was named by Gilmore (1928). It is not extant. Its type is Hypsognathus fenneri.
It was assigned to Cotylosauria by Gilmore (1928), Hay (1930); to Procolophoninae by Colbert (1946); to Procolophonidae by Carroll (1988); and to Leptopleuroninae by Sues et al. (2000), Modesto et al. (2002), Modesto and Damiani (2007), Säilä (2008), Skinner et al. (2020).
