Griphopteron iya was named by Aristov (2018). Its type specimen is PIN 1874/32, a forewing, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Iya Locality (PIN collection 1874), which is in a Toarcian lacustrine - small horizon in the Cheremkhovskaya Formation of the Russian Federation.
