Olenellus broggeri was named by Walcott (1888). It is the type species of Callavia.

It was recombined as Olenellus (Mesonacis) broggeri by Walcott (1889) and Walcott (1890); it was recombined as Holmia broggeri by Marcou (1890) and Peach (1894); it was recombined as Cephalacanthus broggeri by Lapworth (1891); it was recombined as Olenellus (Holmia) broggeri by Walcott (1891); it was recombined as Olenellus (Holmia) broeggeri by Pompeckj (1901); it was recombined as Callavia broeggeri by Palmer and Repina (1993); it was recombined as Callavia broggeri by Matthew (1897), Walcott (1910) and Lieberman (2001).
