Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
V. L. De Pietri et al. 2018Coracoid about the size of Vanellus indicus but more robust and smaller than V. m. novaehollandiae and V. m. miles (Table 1), displaying the following combination of features: (1) foramen nervi supracoracoidei large (Figure 3A); (2) well-developed cup-shaped cotyla sca- pularis (Figure 3A); (3) marked ridge on ventral surface of the processus acrocoracoideus, extending from impressio lig. acrocoracohumeralis towards facies articu- laris clavicularis and overhanging depressed ventral sur- face (Figure 3E, I); (4) ventromedial outline immediately below acrocoracoideal ridge as pronounced notch, almost undercut by ridge (Figure 3I); (5) conspicuous scar along dorsal surface of shaft, from cotyla scapularis to lateral margin of the bone (Figure 3A); (6) impressio m. sternocoracoidei deep with pronounced striations (Figure 3A); (7) deep depression lateral of linea inter- muscularis ventralis (Figure 3M).
Character (2) is present in all examined species of Vanellus, as is character (6), albeit with the striations more conspicuous in some specimens than in others. Character (5) was found, among the examined speci- mens, to be present only in V. liffyae. It differs from V. m. miles and V. m. novaehollandiae in characters (1) and (7), and from V. m. novaehollandiae partly in character (3), as said ventral omal depression is absent in all examined specimens of that taxon. It differs from V. leucurus, V. tricolor and V. spinosus in characters (3) and (4). It differs from all other examined species of Vanellus in characters (3) and (4), although there is some variation in the expression of character (3) among examined species (with V. m. novaehollandiae, V. chilensis, V. senegallus, V. indicus approaching the condition in V. liffyae and V. m. miles), and from most other species of Vanellus in character (1).
