Drilites was named by Blanchard (1845). It is extant.

It was reranked as the family Drilidae by Crowson (1981), Lawrence and Newton (1995); it was reranked as the tribe Drilini by Kusy et al. (2018).

It was assigned to Cantharoidea by Crowson (1981); to Elateroidea by Lawrence and Newton (1995); and to Agrypninae by Kusy et al. (2018).
