Mylodon darwini

Taxonomy
Mylodon darwini was named by Owen (1839). Its type specimen is NHMUK M-16617, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Punta Alta (visited by Darwin during the HMS Beagle voyage), which is in a Lujanian terrestrial conglomerate in Argentina. It is the type species of Mylodon.

Synonyms
  • Gnathopsis oweni was named by Leidy (1852) [Owen (1840) assigned a mandible collected by Darwin at Punta Alta (Buenos Aires Province) to this species].

    It was synonymized subjectively with Mylodon darwini by Kraglievich (1928).
