Taxonomy
Protostega copei was named by Wieland (1909). Its type specimen is YPM 1787 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Hackberry Creek Valley, which is in a Santonian offshore horizon in the Niobrara Formation of Kansas.
It was recombined as Archelon copei by Zangerl (1953); it was recombined as Microstega copei by Hooks (1998).
