Taxonomy
Aptornithidae was named by Bonaparte (1856). It is extant.

It was reranked as the subfamily Aptornithinae by Brodkorb (1967); it was misspelled as Apterornithidae by Carroll (1988), Worthy et al. (2007); it was corrected as Apterornithidae by Livezey and Zusi (2007).

It was assigned to Gruiformes by Zittel (1890); to Rallidae by Brodkorb (1967); to Ralli by Carroll (1988); to Rhynochetides by Livezey and Zusi (2007); and to Gruiformes by Worthy et al. (2007).
