Taxonomy

Erythrosuchus was named by Broom (1905). Its type is Erythrosuchus africanus. It is the type genus of Erythrosuchidae. It was considered monophyletic by Nesbitt (2011).

It was assigned to Phytosauria by Broom (1905), Broom (1906); to Pelycosimia by Huene (1911); to Archosauriformes by Gauthier et al. (1989); and to Erythrosuchidae by Watson (1917), Charig (1967), Charig and Reig (1970), Cruickshank (1972), Charig and Sues (1976), Cruickshank (1978), Benton (1985), Carroll (1988), Benton (1990), Parrish (1993), Nesbitt (2011), Ezcurra (2016).
