Taxonomy
Testudo elephantina was named by Dumeril and Bibron (1835). It is extant. Its type specimen is MNHN 7874 (lectotype), a skeleton. It is the type species of Dipsochelys.

It was recombined as Dipsochelys elephantina by Bour (1982).
