Panchaetothripidae was named by Bagnall (1912). It is extant.

It was reranked as the subfamily Panchaetothripinae by Schliephake (2001), Schliephake (2001), Schliephake (2005), Shmakov (2014), Mound and Hastenpflug-Vesmanis (2021).
