Taxonomy

Rhamphorhynchoidea was named by Plieninger (1901).

It was assigned to Pterosauria by Roxo (1937), Kuhn (1946), Huene (1954), Delair (1958), Young (1964), Kuhn (1966), Charig (1967), Galton (1981), Carroll (1988), Delsate and Wild (2000), Chure et al. (2006), Wang and Zhou (2006).

Synonyms

Comodactylus ostromi was named by Galton (1981). Its type specimen is YPM 9150, a limb element (right fourth metacarpal IV), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Quarry 9, Como Bluff (YPM), which is in a Kimmeridgian/Tithonian fluvial-lacustrine mudstone/sandstone in the Morrison Formation of Wyoming. It is the type species of Comodactylus.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Jensen and Padian (1989), Carpenter et al. (2003).
Comodactylus was named by Galton (1981). Its type is Comodactylus ostromi.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Carpenter et al. (2003).

It was assigned to Rhamphorhynchidae by Galton (1981), Carroll (1988); and to Rhamphorhynchoidea by Chure et al. (2006).
