Stokesosaurus was named by Madsen (1974). Its type is Stokesosaurus clevelandi. It was considered monophyletic by Benson (2008).
It was synonymized subjectively with Iliosuchus by Galton (1976), Madsen and Miller (1979).
It was assigned to Megalosauridae by Russell (1984); to Iliosuchidae by Paul (1988); to Theropoda by Carroll (1988); to Carnosauria by Molnar et al. (1990); to Tyrannosauridae by Madsen (1974), Miller et al. (1991), Chure et al. (2006); and to Tyrannosauroidea by Rauhut (2003), Holtz (2004), Xu et al.
