Blikanasaurus was named by Galton and Van Heerden (1985). Its type is Blikanasaurus cromptoni.
It was assigned to Blikanasauridae by Galton and Van Heerden (1985), Carroll (1988), Farlow (1992), Galton and Van Heerden (1998), Knoll (2004); to Sauropoda by Upchurch et al. (2004), Galton et al.
