Discussion

Derivation of the name: Derived from the smaller skull size of the PLD taxon within the genus Palaeoryx.

Taxonomy
Palaeoryx minor was named by Vasileiadis et al. (2019). Its type specimen is LGPUT PLD 150, a partial skull (almost complete cranium), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Platania (=PLD), which is in a Miocene fluvial sandstone in Greece.

Vasileiadis et al. 2019Skull significantly smaller than in P. pallasi and P. majori; obtuse facial (130-140°) angle; orbits rounded to elliptical, higher that wide; horn-cores inserted above the back half of the orbits, smaller than in P. pallasi, rather straight, tilted backwards and weakly divergent; opisthocranium moderately short; occipital facing mostly caudally and forming an obtuse angle with the cranial roof (∼120°); occipital condyles large and directed downwards; mastoids expanded laterally; basi-occipital relatively short and weakly concave in lateral profile, with a thin median longitudinal crest; dental morphology as in P. pallasi and toothrow size as in P. majori.
