Avionptera communeaui was named by Schubnel et al. (2019). Its type specimen is MNHN.F.A70113, a forewing, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Terril No 7, Avion, which is in a Westphalian C/Westphalian D terrestrial shale in France. It is the type species of Avionptera.
