Tolypelepididae was named by Strand (1934). Its type is Tolypelepis.

It was reranked as the subfamily Tolypelepidinae by Soehn and Wilson (1990).

It was assigned to Cyathaspididae by Soehn and Wilson (1990); and to Tolypelepidiformes by Sallan et al. (2018), van der Laan (2019).
