Metoposaurus azerouali was named by Dutuit (1976). Its type specimen is MNHN.F.ARG 5,, a skull (A relatively well preserved and slightly deformed skull), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Arganasaurus azerouali by Buffa et al. (2019).
