Alexornithidae was named by Brodkorb (1976). It is not extant. Its type is Alexornis.

It was assigned to Alexornithiformes by Brodkorb (1976), Kurochkin (1996), Panteleyev (1998), Kurochkin (2000).

Zhyraornithidae was named by Nessov (1984). It is not extant. Its type is Zhyraornis.

It was synonymized subjectively with Alexornithidae by Kurochkin (1996).

It was assigned to Ichthyornithiformes by Nessov (1984); and to Enantiornithiformes by Carroll (1988).
