Taxonomy
Geranopterus was named by Milne-Edwards (1892). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Geranopteridae.

It was assigned to Coraciidae by Gaillard (1908), Lambrecht (1933), Carroll (1988), Mlikovsky (2002); to Geranopteridae by Mayr and Mourer-Chauviré (2000), Clarke et al. (2009); and to Coracii by Olson (1985), Mayr (2022).
