Gruioidea was named by Stejneger (1885). It is extant. Its type is Grus.

It was corrected as Gruoidae by Hay (1930); it was corrected as Gruoidea by Wetmore (1933), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956), Wetmore (1960), Clarke et al. (2005), Mayr (2005), Livezey and Zusi (2007).

It was assigned to Grallae by Hay (1902); to Gruiformes by Hay (1930); to Gruiformes by Wetmore (1933); to Aves by Mayr (2005); and to Grues by Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956), Wetmore (1960), Clarke et al. (2005), Livezey and Zusi (2007).
