Eurystomus was named by Vieillot (1816). It is extant. Its type is Eurystomus stehlini.

It was assigned to Coraciidae by Carroll (1988), Mayr and Mourer-Chauviré (2000), Clarke et al. (2009) and Clements et al. (2017).
