Taxonomy

Bathornis was named by Wetmore (1927). Its type is Bathornis veredus. It is the type genus of Bathornithidae.

It was assigned to Bathornithinae by Wetmore (1927), Hay (1930); to Bathornithinae by Mourer-Chauviré (1981); and to Bathornithidae by Lambrecht (1933), Wetmore (1940), Galbreath (1953), Wetmore (1956), Wetmore (1960), Cracraft (1968), Carroll (1988).
