Taxonomy
Eleutherornis was named by Schaub (1940). It is not extant. Its type is Loncornis helveticus. It is the type genus of Eleutherornithidae.

It was assigned to Eleutherornithidae by Wetmore (1960), Houde (1988), Carroll (1988) and Mayr (2009); and to Psilopterinae by Angst et al. (2013).
