Rostratulidae was named by Ridgway (1919). It is extant.

It was assigned to Limicolae by Lambrecht (1933); to Charadriiformes by Carroll (1988); to Parrae by Livezey and Zusi (2007); and to Scolopaci by del Hoyo et al. (2014) and Mayr (2022).
