Illaenurus dia was named by Walcott (1890). Its type specimen is USNM 23865 and is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Macelloura.
It was recombined as Nileus dia by Walcott (1914); it was recombined as Macelloura dia by Resser (1935).
