Cunninghamia was named by Brown. It is extant. It is the type genus of Cunninghamioideae. It was considered monophyletic by Gadek et al. (2000), Ahuja and Neale (2002).
It was assigned to Taxodiaceae by Ozaki (1974), Liu et al. (1996); to Cunninghamioideae by Gadek et al. (2000), Ahuja and Neale (2002); and to Cupressaceae by Christenhusz et al. (2011).
