Byzantinia hellenicus

Taxonomy
Ruscinomys hellenicus was named by Freudenthal (1970). Its type specimen is AMNH 20766, a maxilla (right maxilla with M1-M3), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Samos Quarry 4, which is in a Messinian terrestrial horizon in Greece.

It was recombined as Byzantinia hellenicus by Black et al. (1980).

M. Freudenthal 1970Molars moderately hypsodont, with continuous longitudinal lophs; smaller than those of R. europaeus, about the size of R schaubi; the most characteristic feature is the relative length of M3, which, compared to the lengths of M1 and M2, is longer than it is in any of the known species of Ruscinomys or Cricetodon, sensu stricto.
