Onthophagidae was named by Burmeister (1846). It is extant. Its type is Onthophagus.

It was corrected as Onthophagini by Bouchard et al. (2011), Tarasov and Dimitrov (2016) and Tarasov et al. (2016).

It was assigned to Scarabaeinae by Bouchard et al. (2011), Tarasov and Dimitrov (2016) and Tarasov et al. (2016).
