Taxonomy
Ptilodontoidea was named by Sloan and Van Valen (1965) [name based on Ptilodontidae Simpson 1927]. It is not extant. Its type is Ptilodontidae. It was considered monophyletic by Kielan-Jaworowska and Hurum (2001).

It was reranked as the unranked clade Ptilodontoidea by McKenna (1975); it was reranked as the superfamily Ptilodontoidea by Kielan-Jaworowska and Hurum (2001), Scott et al. (2002) and Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004).

It was assigned to Multituberculata by Sloan and Van Valen (1965), Clemens and Kielan-Jaworowska (1979), Lillegraven and McKenna (1986) and McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Cimolodonta by McKenna (1975), Kielan-Jaworowska and Hurum (2001), Scott et al. (2002) and Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004).
