Sphenopsalis was named by Matthew et al. (1928). Its type is Sphenopsalis nobilis.
It was assigned to Multituberculata by Matthew et al. (1928); to Taeniolabididae by Matthew et al. (1929), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Kielan-Jaworowska and Hurum (2001); to Lambdopsalidae by Williamson et al. (2016); and to Lambdopsalidae by Mao et al. (2016).
