Amblotherium was named by Owen (1871). Its type is Amblotherium soricinum.

It was assigned to Marsupialia by Owen (1871); to Amphitheriidae by Lydekker (1894); and to Dryolestidae by Simpson (1927), Simpson (1928), Simpson (1929), Hay (1930), Kraus (1979), Prothero (1981), McKenna and Bell (1997), Engelmann and Callison (1998), Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004) and Rougier et al. (2011).

It was replaced with Odontostylus by Trouessart (1898); it was replaced with Trouessartia by Cossman (1899); it was replaced with Amblotherium by Simpson (1928), Simpson (1929) and Hay (1930).

Athrodon was named by Osborn (1887).
