Acrotrichinae was named by Reitter (1909). It is extant. Its type is Acrotrichis.

It was reranked as the tribe Acrotrichini by Polilov et al. (2019).

It was assigned to Ptiliidae by Lawrence and Newton (1995), Bouchard et al. (2011); and to Ptiliinae by Polilov et al. (2019).
