Bonapartheriidae was named by Pascual (1980). It is not extant. Its type is Bonapartherium.

It was assigned to Marsupialia by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Polydolopimorphia by Goin et al. (2009), Oliveira and Goin (2011).
