Taxonomy
Sminthopsis was named by Thomas (1887). It is extant. Its type is Phascogale crassicaudata.
It was assigned to Sminthopsinae by Dawson et al. (1999); to Sminthopsini by Krajewski et al. (1992) and Wilson and Reeder (2005); and to Dasyuridae by Wroe (1996), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Macken and Reed (2013).
