Pseudocheirus was named by Ogilby (1837). It is extant. Its type is Pseudocheirus albertisii.
It was assigned to Petauridae by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Pseudocheiridae by Springer et al. (1994), Dawson et al. (1999); and to Pseudocheirinae by Pocock (1921), Wilson and Reeder (2005).
