Palaeictops was named by Matthew (1899). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Diacodon by Matthew (1918), Hay (1930), Matthew (1937).

It was assigned to Leptictidae by Matthew (1899), Hay (1902), Gazin (1956), Novacek (1977), McKenna and Bell (1997), Hooker (2013); and to Leptictinae by Van Valen (1967), Velazco and Novacek (2016).
