Elwynella was named by Rose and Bown (1982). It is not extant. Its type is Elwynella oreas.
It was assigned to Phenacolemurinae by Gunnell (1989); to Simpsonlemurini by Robinson and Ivy (1994); and to Paromomyidae by Rose and Bown (1982), McKenna and Bell (1997).
