Taxonomy
Culex protolepis was named by Cockerell (1915). Its type specimen is USNM 61429, a wing, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Bembridge Marls (Brodie coll), which is in a Priabonian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal lime mudstone in the Bouldnor Formation of the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Aedes protolepis by Edwards (1923); it was recombined as Ochlerotatus protolepis by Szadziewski (2019).
