Derivation of name. From the Latin word for myrtle, which is hypothesized as the ancient name of Murcia, and refers to the Myrtus, a plant distributed in both southern Europe and the north of Africa.

Taxonomy
Alatochelon myrteum was named by Pérez-García et al. (2020). Its type specimen is T-3-BC-MU, a partial shell (a partial shell including the articulate anterior region of both the carapace and the plastron), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Puerto de la Cadena, which is in a Pliocene floodplain sandstone in the Cigarron Formation of Spain. It is the type species of Alatochelon.
