Plagioctenodon was named by Bown (1979). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Leptacodon by Smith (1996).

It was assigned to Nyctitheriidae by Bown (1979), Carroll (1988), Gunnell et al. (2008); and to Nyctitheriinae by Beard and Dawson (2009).
