Hyracolestes was named by Matthew and Granger (1925). Its type is Hyracolestes ermineus.

It was assigned to Oxyclaenidae by Matthew and Granger (1925); to Geolabidinae by Van Valen (1967); to Insectivora by Carroll (1988); to Micropternodontidae by Lopatin and Kondrashov (2004); and to Sarcodontinae by Lopatin (2006).
