Flabellaria was named by Sternberg (1821). It is not extant.

It was replaced with Exflabellaria by La Motte (1952); it was synonymized subjectively with Palmacites by Andrews (1970).

It was assigned to Arecaceae by Knowlton (1919); and to Coryphoideae by Mai (2000).
