Leptadapis was named by Gervais (1876). It was considered monophyletic by Godinot and Couette (2008).
It was assigned to Adapina by Beard et al. (1994); to Adapidae by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Adapinae by Hooker (1986), Godinot and Couette (2008).
